These burgers combine lean ground turkey with flavorful turkey sausage for a lighter twist on a classic. The fennel and oregano bring an Italian flair that pairs beautifully with the melted Asiago and mozzarella.
Grilling the vegetables in a basket gives them a smoky char that complements the juicy patties. Serve on whole wheat buns for a wholesome, satisfying meal.
Ingredients
Converted amounts are rounded.
Method
- Preheat a grill to medium-high. While the grill heats, prepare the burgers: place the ground turkey, turkey sausage (casings removed), panko, basil, oregano, fennel seeds, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes in a large mixing bowl.
- Using your fingers, gently mix the ingredients until evenly combined. Be careful not to overwork or compact the meat—just bring everything together.
- Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions and shape into patties.
- Place the patties on the hot grill and cook for about 5 minutes, until the bottoms are nicely browned.
- Flip the burgers and continue grilling for another 5 minutes, or until cooked through. Just before they are done, top each patty with some mozzarella and Asiago cheese and let it melt.
- Meanwhile, place the sliced red onion and bell peppers in a medium bowl. Drizzle with olive oil, season with a pinch of salt and pepper, and toss well to coat.
- Transfer the vegetables to a grill basket and grill over medium-high heat, turning often, until softened and lightly charred—about 8 minutes. Adjust the heat if they start to burn.
- Toast the buns on the grill, if desired. Serve each burger on a bun, topped with the grilled vegetables.
💡 Tips
- If you don't have a grill basket, you can thread the vegetable slices onto skewers or wrap them in foil.
- For extra flavor, add a pinch of smoked paprika to the vegetable oil mixture.
- Make sure the grill is clean and well-oiled to prevent the burgers from sticking.
