This ancient Greek tradition of mulled wine, known as krasomelo, transforms simple red wine into a comforting, fragrant drink with just a few additions. The combination of honey and spices gently mellows the wine while infusing it with warmth and sweetness.
Perfectly served in small glasses as a winter welcome drink, this recipe is quick to prepare and brings a touch of tradition to any holiday table. The optional orange peel adds a bright citrus note that balances the rich spices.
Ingredients
Converted amounts are rounded.
Method
- Pour the wine into a saucepan and bring it to a boil over medium-high heat.
- As soon as the wine becomes frothy, lower the heat to low. Add the honey, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and orange peel (if using).
- Let the mixture simmer gently for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the honey dissolves and the flavors meld together.
- Remove from the heat and allow it to rest for a few minutes so the spices settle.
- Strain the spiced wine through a fine sieve into a serving pitcher or directly into shot glasses. Serve warm and enjoy.
💡 Tips
- For a stronger spice flavor, let the wine steep for an extra 5 minutes before straining.
- Use a good quality semi-sweet red wine for best results; avoid wines that are too dry or too sweet.
- You can double the recipe easily for a crowd.
