There's something irresistible about warm, homemade breadsticks fresh from the oven. Their soft, pillowy interior and lightly crisp exterior make them a versatile side that elevates any meal.
This simple recipe uses everyday ingredients and quick-rise yeast, so you can have a batch of golden breadsticks ready in about half an hour. They're perfect for weeknight dinners, holiday gatherings, or whenever you crave that comforting, bakery-style touch.

Method
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 1-1/2 cups of the flour, the yeast, sugar, and salt.
- In a small saucepan, warm the milk, 1/4 cup of the water, and the butter until the mixture reaches 120° to 130°F. Pour the warm liquid into the dry ingredients and beat on medium speed until just combined. Gradually add enough of the remaining flour to form a stiff dough.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6 to 8 minutes. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to coat the top. Cover and let rise in a warm spot until doubled in size, roughly 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F. Punch down the dough. Pinch off pieces the size of golf balls. On a lightly floured surface, roll each piece into a 6-inch rope. Arrange the ropes on greased baking sheets, spacing them 1 inch apart. Cover and let rise again for 15 minutes.
- Whisk the egg white with the remaining 1 tablespoon of water, then brush the mixture over the breadsticks. Sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake until golden brown, about 10 minutes. Transfer the breadsticks to wire racks to cool.
💡 Tips
- For a shiny, golden crust, make sure to brush the egg wash evenly over each breadstick.
- If you don't have quick-rise yeast, you can use active dry yeast, but you'll need to proof it first and expect a longer rise time.
- Store leftover breadsticks in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days; reheat briefly in the oven to restore softness.
