Craving something sweet but don't want to spend hours in the kitchen? This single-serving chocolate mug cake is the answer. It's incredibly easy to make, using simple ingredients you likely already have, and it delivers a moist, fluffy cake that satisfies your chocolate cravings without the extra calories.
Whether you're short on time or just want a personal treat, this recipe is perfect. You can make it in the microwave for a super quick dessert, or bake it in the oven for a slightly more traditional texture. Either way, you'll have a delicious, low-fat chocolate cake in minutes.
Ingredients
Converted amounts are rounded.
Method
- Take a 1/2-cup capacity mug and spray it with cooking oil spray. Add the flour, sweetener (or sugar), cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt into the mug. Whisk to combine.
- Add the melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix well until smooth.
- (Optional) Fold in 1/2 tablespoon of the chocolate chips into the batter. Sprinkle the remaining chocolate chips on top.
- Microwave method: Microwave on high for 40 seconds. Open the door and gently touch the top with your fingertip. If it's still slightly underdone in the middle, microwave for another 10 seconds until cooked through (but don't overdo it, as the cake will continue cooking in the mug once removed).
- Oven method: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray a 1/2-cup capacity ramekin with cooking oil spray. Prepare the batter as above and bake for about 15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. For a fudgier texture, check after 11 minutes – the toothpick should come out slightly dirty but not with a lot of batter attached.
- Serve warm, optionally with fruit, powdered sugar, ice cream, or whipped cream. This cake is also delicious on its own.
💡 Tips
- For a fudgier cake, slightly underbake it in the oven and let it rest for a minute before serving.
- If you don't have self-raising flour, you can use 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour plus 1/8 teaspoon baking powder.
- To make it dairy-free, use coconut oil instead of butter and a plant-based milk.
