Method
- Rinse the red lentils in a sieve under cold water and let them drain well.
- Peel and finely dice the onion. Heat a little olive oil in a pot, then add the onion and black mustard seeds. Sauté until the onion is translucent.
- Add 1 tablespoon curry powder, 1 tablespoon sweet paprika, 1 teaspoon pepper, and the dried chili to the pot. Stir in 1 tablespoon of tomato paste.
- Immediately add the rinsed lentils and pour in at least 300 ml of water or vegetable broth. If using water, add a little extra salt. Let the lentils simmer for at least 15 minutes, stirring occasionally and checking the liquid level. Add more water if needed.
- Cut the smoked tofu into even cubes and fry in a pan with a little olive oil until lightly browned.
- Halve the cherry tomatoes and add them along with the tofu to the simmering lentils. Let it simmer for another 5 minutes, then remove from heat.
- Serve the finished lentil dal in a bowl or deep plate. Optionally, accompany with fresh or toasted bread. Enjoy!
💡 Tips
- For a spicier dal, keep the dried chili whole or crush it before adding.
- If you prefer a creamier texture, blend a portion of the dal before adding the tofu and tomatoes.
- Smoked tofu can be substituted with regular firm tofu for a milder flavor.
