This homemade ketchup comes together in just 30 minutes with only 10 ingredients. The whiskey adds a subtle boozy depth, while the apple cider vinegar and brown sugar balance sweet and tangy notes.
It's vegan, gluten-free, and incredibly versatile. Use it as a dip for fries, a spread for burgers, or a glaze for grilled veggies. Store it in the fridge for weeks, and you'll never go back to store-bought.
Ingredients
Converted amounts are rounded.
Method
- Place all ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk until well combined.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally. This should take about 5 minutes.
- Reduce the heat to low and let the ketchup simmer for 15 minutes, stirring from time to time, so the flavors meld and the sauce thickens slightly.
- Taste and adjust: add more whiskey for a stronger boozy note, extra brown sugar for sweetness, vinegar for tang, or liquid smoke for smokiness.
- Remove from heat and let the ketchup cool completely in the pan. Then transfer to a clean jar or bottle and seal with a lid.
- Store in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 weeks (or longer). Serve with fries, burgers, or any dish that needs a smoky, tangy kick.
💡 Tips
- For a smoother ketchup, blend the sauce with an immersion blender after cooking.
- If you don't have liquid smoke, you can add a pinch of smoked paprika for a similar effect.
- This ketchup also works great as a glaze for grilled tofu or vegetables.
