This colorful slaw is all about fresh, tangy flavors without any mayonnaise. The combination of shredded red cabbage and carrots makes it crunchy and vibrant, while orange zest and lime juice give it a sweet-and-sour kick.
It's a make-ahead side that actually improves with time—perfect for picnics, barbecues, or as a crunchy topping for tacos and sandwiches. The shallots and cilantro add a gentle aromatic note, and a touch of sugar or honey balances the acidity.
Ingredients
Converted amounts are rounded.
Method
- In a large bowl, combine the shredded red cabbage, shredded carrots, finely chopped shallots, minced garlic, and coarsely chopped cilantro.
- Add the orange zest and juice, lime juice, vegetable oil, sugar or honey, salt, and black pepper. Toss everything together until well combined.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a lid and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or up to overnight. The longer it sits, the more the flavors meld.
- Before serving, stir the slaw well. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed—add a little more sugar or honey for extra sweetness, or a pinch more salt for balance.
💡 Tips
- For best flavor, let the slaw marinate overnight in the fridge.
- If using honey, warm it slightly to make it easier to mix.
- This slaw is excellent as a topping for pulled pork tacos or grilled fish.
