Short of simply popping open a beer or a straight slug of whiskey, there are few drinks that are less labor-intensive than the venerable highball. It's a simple and flexible mix of booze, bubbles and ice that can be prepared with almost zero thought.
But a little care in the execution makes all the difference between a watery glass of 'meh' and a damn refreshing drink. Here's how to make it properly.
Method
- Fill a highball glass completely with ice.
- Pour 2 ounces of your chosen liquor over the ice.
- Top up with 2β6 ounces of chilled club soda (or ginger ale), adjusting the amount to your taste.
- Stir gently once or twice to combine, then serve immediately.
π‘ Tips
- Use large, clear ice cubes if possible β they melt slower and water down the drink less.
- Chill the club soda or ginger ale thoroughly before using.
- Feel free to use a mix of club soda and ginger ale for a slightly sweeter taste.
