Elevate your barbecue or weeknight meal with these incredibly simple grilled sweet onions. Using skewers makes handling them on the grill a breeze, preventing those frustrating moments when onions slip through the grates.
This method ensures the onions cook to tender perfection, absorbing a lovely smoky flavor that complements any main course. They are a fantastic way to add a sweet and savory dimension to your plate with minimal effort.
Ingredients
Converted amounts are rounded.
Method
- Remove the outer skin from the onions. Keep the root end intact to help hold the onion together while cutting.
- To prepare onion rings: Lay an onion on its side and slice it into ½-inch thick rounds. Remove and discard the root end. You should get 4–6 rings per onion. Carefully thread metal skewers through the center of the onion rings, using your other hand to keep them aligned.
- To prepare onion wedges: Cut each onion in half vertically, then cut each half into two smaller wedges. Remove and discard the root end. This should yield about 12 wedges per onion. Insert metal skewers starting from the narrower side of each wedge and push through to the wider end.
- Brush the skewered onions generously with olive oil, ensuring all sides are coated. Season them well with salt and pepper.
- Preheat your grill or grill pan to medium heat and lightly oil the cooking surface. Place the onion skewers directly onto the hot grill. Cook for 5 minutes, then carefully attempt to flip them. If they stick, allow them to cook for another 1–2 minutes before flipping. Continue grilling for another 5–7 minutes, or until the onions are tender and easily release from the skewer.
- Serve the grilled onions immediately, garnished with fresh chopped parsley if desired.
💡 Tips
- If you don't have metal skewers, you can soak wooden skewers in water for at least 30 minutes before use to prevent them from burning on the grill.
- Ensure your grill is clean before placing the onions on it to avoid any sticking or unwanted flavors.
