This homemade chicken gyros brings all the flavors of the classic Greek street food right to your kitchen. Marinated chicken breasts are oven-roasted until golden, then sliced and served in warm pita bread with tomato, onion, and a refreshing tzatziki sauce.
Perfect for a quick and satisfying weeknight meal, this recipe is easy to customize. You can add extra veggies or even swap the chicken for grilled halloumi for a vegetarian twist. Either way, the combination of juicy chicken, cool tzatziki, and warm pita is simply irresistible.

Method
- Preheat the oven to 482°F.
- In a small baking dish, combine the chicken breasts, paprika, oregano, minced garlic, and olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. Use your hands to massage the chicken so the marinade coats evenly. Bake for about 20 minutes, until the chicken is golden brown on the outside and cooked through.
- Transfer the baked chicken to a cutting board and let it rest for a minute. Then slice it into thin strips.
- Meanwhile, prepare the tzatziki: Grate the cucumber using a hand grater (not too fine) and place it in a mixing bowl. Add the yogurt, minced garlic, chopped dill, red wine vinegar, and olive oil. Stir everything together until well combined.
- Heat a frying pan over high heat and add a splash of olive oil. Reduce the heat to medium, then place one pita flatbread in the pan. Cook for 3–4 minutes, flipping once, until lightly browned and warm. Repeat with the remaining flatbreads.
- Assemble the wraps: Lay a warm pita flatbread on a plate. Add 2–3 slices of tomato, a few slices of onion, some chicken strips, and 1–2 tablespoons of tzatziki. Roll the pita tightly, wrap in aluminum foil if desired, and serve immediately.
💡 Tips
- For extra flavor, marinate the chicken for 30 minutes or up to 2 hours in the fridge before baking.
- If the pita breads are thick, you can warm them directly on a grill pan or over a gas flame for a smoky touch.
- Leftover tzatziki can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 days and served with other dishes.
