Caramelized Banana and Apple Topping

A quick and easy topping that works beautifully over ice cream, oatmeal, or yogurt, ready in just 10 minutes.

This caramelized fruit topping is a fantastic way to dress up a simple dessert or breakfast. The bananas get nicely browned and slightly crispy, while the apple adds a tender, sweet-tart contrast.

It comes together in a single skillet with minimal effort, and you can easily adjust the spices or nuts to your liking. Perfect for when you want something special without spending much time in the kitchen.

Converted amounts are rounded.

Method

  1. Melt the butter in a small skillet over medium heat.
  2. Slice the banana into thirds, then cut each piece lengthwise to get 6 slices total.
  3. Place the banana slices in the melted butter with the flat side down. Cook uncovered for 3 minutes over medium heat (or medium-low if using a large burner).
  4. Meanwhile, wash the apple and finely dice or slice it into pieces about 1/2 cm thick. Choose a good cooking apple like Gala, Fuji, Golden Delicious, or Cortland—anything not too tart works.
  5. Flip each banana slice individually. They should be nicely browned and slightly crispy on the bottom. If not, cook for 1–2 more minutes.
  6. Add the diced apple to the skillet, trying to place it in the spaces between the bananas so it sits in the melted butter. Sprinkle everything with cinnamon, nuts, and optional ginger.
  7. Cover the skillet and cook for 3 minutes over low heat, checking once or twice to prevent over-browning.
  8. Remove the lid and increase the heat back to medium to caramelize the fruit a bit more. Watch closely and stir gently to avoid burning.
  9. Take the skillet off the heat and serve the topping warm. It works as a dessert for one, or as a topping for 2–4 servings.

💡 Tips

  • For extra crunch, toast the nuts in a dry skillet before adding them.
  • If you prefer a less sweet topping, use a tart apple like Granny Smith.
  • Serve immediately for the best texture; the bananas soften as they cool.
