Capture the sweet, vibrant essence of summer with this easy homemade strawberry liqueur. It's a delightful way to preserve the flavor of fresh strawberries and create a beautiful, ruby-red drink.
This recipe relies on a simple maceration process where strawberries release their juices, mingling with sugar to create a natural syrup. This syrup is then combined with your preferred spirit, resulting in a smooth and aromatic liqueur.
Ingredients
Converted amounts are rounded.
Method
- Wash the strawberries, remove the green tops and stems, and gently pat them dry with paper towels.
- Cut the strawberries into halves or quarters, depending on their size.
- Layer the cut strawberries and sugar alternately in a large jar or a container with a lid that fits in the refrigerator.
- Refrigerate for 3 days, shaking the jar 2-3 times daily to help dissolve the sugar. The strawberries will release a significant amount of liquid, forming a syrup with the sugar.
- If the sugar hasn't completely dissolved by the third day, it will dissolve once the alcohol is added.
- On the third day, strain the strawberries through a sieve lined with a triple-folded piece of cheesecloth or tulle (like from a bombonniere), folded 2-3 times. Do not press the strawberries.
- Measure the resulting syrup and mix it with an equal volume of your chosen spirit or the 95% proof neutral grain alcohol.
- Pour the strawberry liqueur into sterilized bottles or jars and let them sit in the sun for 30 days.
- If the liqueur is too sweet after this period, add more alcohol to balance the flavor.
- Store the liqueur in the refrigerator in sterilized bottles.
- Serve chilled in small liqueur glasses or, in the summer, in tall glasses filled with crushed ice.
💡 Tips
- For a clearer liqueur, you can strain it a second time through a coffee filter.
- Experiment with different spirits to find your favorite flavor profile.
- The macerated strawberries can be used in desserts or jams.
